WRAP Runs the Half Marathon for BrightPIP

At WRAP we are passionate about easing the many ups-and-downs of family life for parents with our childcare facilities and welcoming Play Cafe. But it doesn’t stop there!

This year WRAP founders Ed and Sarah are running the Brighton half-marathon in support of BrightPIP, a local charity that is dedicated to supporting young and vulnerable families, many with complex needs.

Dr Kerry Taylor, founder of BrightPIP and a local mum told us more about BrightPIP and the half marathon!

“On Sunday 26th February 2023, 20 brave and passionate individuals will be running (or in my case attempting to run) the Brighton Half marathon. Some of us are young, fast and very fit, some of us…less so.

“Our BrightPIP charity has a mission for every baby to feel safe, secure and loved. Every penny we raise on our 13.1 miles enables us to reach out to more vulnerable pregnant people, and more 0–3-year-olds and their parents who need parent infant therapy in Brighton.

BrightPIP is founded on the principle that investing in young families is the most important way to invest in the future of our society.

“We all have a different reason for running this crazy long way. As a Clinical Psychologist, working with children and families for the last 25 years has clearly illustrated to me how early experience lasts a lifetime. In my personal life I really struggled when becoming a parent for the first time 18 years ago. I didn't get the support I needed. In hindsight I realise adversity in my early childhood was triggered when I became a parent. I now know this is very common. This led me to set up BrightPIP and means I am determined to ensure young families get the support they need.

“BrightPIP is founded on the principle that investing in young families is the most important way to invest in the future of our society.  We are honoured to be supported by WRAP. We know that WRAP value and cherish family life and place it at the heart of their business.

“Our families can be struggling for a whole range of reasons. Parents of young children are by definition, required to meet the extreme demands of a 24/7 role whilst often sleep deprived. What makes this even harder is when a family is suffering challenges such as financial hardship, isolation, homelessness, domestic abuse or are disadvantaged due to physical or learning disabilities.

“BrightPIP parents may have had difficulties themselves as children, such as having had abusive experiences or having experienced Care. They are often struggling with birth trauma, post-traumatic stress or ongoing mental health conditions.

“Families tell us that we have made a massive difference in their lives and colleagues in the NHS urge us to keep on providing this work for families. Every donation, no matter how small, helps. Please share the donation link with anyone you think would be interested in supporting us!”

So much has changed. I feel like I am better able to make sense of things, and my own feelings. Just being given that emotional support, and preparation made such a difference

Really helpful and beneficial to talk through and explore my experiences of my pregnancy, birth and postnatal experiences which were during the COVID-19 lockdowns and how this affected me emotionally, particularly with a long-term health condition

It is an excellent much needed service. The therapists are very supportive and the women I refer feel that they can open up much more’

Thank you for this great service. I do hope the option for these sessions continues as part of your service model as I know there is a need, and it is great to have somewhere to refer.
