Meet the Members: Karl Elwood
This week we spoke to our member, WRAP partner and vino guru
Karl Elwood to find out what it takes to be a professional wine curator
Tell us about yourself and what you do!
I like to help customers better understand why they like the wines they do.
How did your venture in the world of wines come to be?
After a stint of picking grapes in France one year.
You host a monthly event here at WRAP, Tidy Hour, what can someone expect when attending the event? The name Tidy Hour also shares a surprising story behind it! Do you mind sharing it with us?
These are really relaxed and informal pop-up style after work wine tastings from 5-6.30pm - no presentations or speeches and no prior knowledge required! Just 3 or 4 fabulous wines that have a great story and should be tried.
The origins of the word Tidy is Welsh and is probably best known outside of Wales thanks to the popular TV show, Gavin & Stacey. It encapsulates the words great, fantastic and marvellous all in one. Just like the wines we will be showing!
Tell us a bit about your process… What goes into curating a balanced and exciting selection of wines?
It starts with a good story and is informed by the passion of the winemaker(s) that captures the imagination and makes you want to pour that in a glass. Wine is very personal, there are no rights or wrongs. If you like the wine, then that’s great!
For us rookies, any tips and tricks on how to spot a good wine? How much insight can the design of a bottle give away?
The good news is that the more you taste, the better you will become at spotting a good wine that you will like. It matters little how good you are told it is,If you don’t like it. Fine wine or everyday wine, there will be some you will like and some you won’t. So taste taste taste and your knowledge will grow naturally.
We are honoured to have you not just as a partner but also as part of our members community. That means…Quickfire round! Give us 3 reasons why you were drawn to WRAP
Great space
Excellent location
Relaxed working environment
Any advice for someone starting out on a business venture in your industry?
Be yourself and share the passion that drives you.
Anything else you want to share with us?
I am also involved in a business and wine networking venture called The Business Leaders Wine Club. We host events around the city to a small group of business owners and decision makers who share an interest in wine. Each event has a guest speaker who will share their experiences in business and a selection of wine, cheese and charcuterie to try.
